“GIGS as a community is where I have met some of my best friends and had the most fun on a golf course.”
It all started when…
As a kid, I used to caddy for my dad who was a golf nut. I eventually wanted to have a go myself and he used to drive me almost every night after school to the local driving range in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex where we’d hit bucket after bucket of balls. I loved it and eventually joined as a junior golfer at the club where my brother Gary was the assistant professional. My handicap came tumbling down over the years and at my lowest I played off 5.
Encouraged by my Dad, I flirted with the thought of turning professional, but when I played a few amateur tournaments, 5 was good, but a long way off earning a living. After Uni, I ended up working at several golf and country clubs, my first being at the Thana City Golf & Country Club, Thailand and my most recent in Surrey.
Starting GIGS
Growing up gay and in the closet felt quite suffocating at times. My social environment was very limited, so I decided to start a golf society in the hope of meeting new women golfers. With the help of a fellow gay golfer I had met online, GIGS was born and a whole new world opened up. I have never looked back and can honestly say, I have met some of the most wonderful women playing golf with GIGS, who have become the best of friends.
As we move into a future where the golf community and the wider sporting world are finally waking up to the economic viability of women’s sports and that women can provide a wonderful opportunity for growth, I am feeling very positive about the future of Women’s Golf and GIGS.
“Golf is a sport for life and I intend playing as long as I am able.”
